Electronic waste is a growing concern as it contains hazardous materials which cannot be placed in landfills. Computers and electronics are becoming more prevalent as a result of price decreases, planned obsolescence and the data processing efficiencies required by business. The result of this progression is huge volumes of obsolete and non functioning electronic equipment that pose an environmental issue if disposed of irresponsibly.

What Happens to the Electronic Waste once it is dropped off at Urbanmine?

The Process:

Once electronic waste has been dropped off at Urbanmine it is classified according to item. The items are securely packaged for shipping to processing facilities located in Canada and the United States. All items that still have life in them will be fully dismantled and refurbished by an EPA certified company to be remanufactured into new electronics. Any components that are at the end of their life cycle and cannot be remanufactured will be dismantled and recycled responsibly with no items ending up in landfills or water sources. Circuit boards and internal wiring are refined for their metal content. Plastic is crushed and recycled into raw material to be reused in new products and the glass from monitors and televisions are sent to glass manufacturers to be recycled into new material. All hard drives that are rebuilt are completely purged of their memory to ensure that no information can be extracted. The hard drives that cannot be remanufactured are automatically shredded and destroyed. Information security is important and we must ensure that our customer's data cannot be recovered.

Delivering E-Waste

Urbanmine is an electronic waste drop off depot. If pick up service is required a courier service can be arranged at the cost of the customer.
